Boatbuilding Knowledge Behind the CNC Work

Boat parts are not simply shapes cut from plywood.

Their position in the vessel, material, grain direction, orientation, adjoining components, assembly sequence and final use can all affect how they should be prepared and machined.

Williamstown CNC Works is operated by third-generation shipwright Nick Atkins, with more than 20 years of CAD and CNC experience and a working background in wooden boatbuilding.

That experience now concentrates on CNC-cut components, detailed boat kits and production support rather than routinely taking on complete vessel builds.

We understand how flat parts need to relate to the structure being built, while working from information approved and supplied by the customer, boatbuilder or designer.

We cnc cut plywood, timber and suitable sheet components for new builds, repairs, refits and marine fitouts. The production method depends on the files or reference information supplied, the material, the required machining and how the parts will be used.

What Information Do You Already Have?

You do not always need finished CNC files before contacting us, but the project must have dependable geometry, dimensions or approved design information before the final components can be produced.

Supply the latest CAD files with the material, thickness, quantities and machining instructions.

We can review the files, prepare the CAM, nest the parts and quote the machining.

The Boat Design Is Approved

You have approved plans, drawings or design files, but the parts still need to be prepared for CNC production.

File preparation, part separation, machining details, numbering and nesting can be reviewed and quoted as paid work.

A Pattern or Existing Component Exists

A full-size pattern or existing component may provide useful starting geometry.

The part must be complete and stable enough to measure. Damage, distortion and missing areas may prevent it from being a reliable production reference.

The Project Is Still an Idea

An image, rough sketch or general boat concept is not enough to produce finished marine components.

Vessel design, structural decisions and naval architecture need to be resolved before CNC production begins. Once the design is sufficiently defined, we can review the production work required.

Boatbuilding Experience Applied to Detailed CNC Kits

WOODEN BOAT KITS

Williamstown CNC Works has experience developing and producing detailed wooden boat kits, including custom projects prepared with boatbuilders and marine designers.

We hold production rights for selected boat designs under licence and can also review authorised design files supplied by customers, designers and rights holders.

Depending on the project, kit-production work may include:

  • preparing approved geometry for CNC production

  • separating and organising parts

  • dividing oversized components where required

  • adding specified locating and assembly details

  • preparing temporary building frames or formers

  • nesting parts across sheets

  • numbering port, starboard and matching components

  • grouping parts into useful build stages

  • test cutting and revising the production set

Developing a practical kit from a boat design can involve substantial CAD and production preparation. This work is quoted separately from ordinary cutting.

Not every kit or marine project can be shown publicly. Some work is completed under confidentiality agreements or controlled file-access arrangements for designers and commercial clients.

Customers supplying third-party designs must have permission to provide and reproduce the relevant files.

TRADE PRODUCTION SUPPORT

CNC Support for Boatbuilders, Designers and Marine Trades

WCW can act as an external CNC and production workshop for marine businesses that have defined work but do not want to maintain their own router, programming system or additional production space. We can work directly with boatbuilders, shipwrights, repairers, marine joiners, designers and kit suppliers.

Marine trade support may suit businesses requiring:

Changes to the design, quantities or material after quoting may require the production work to be reviewed again.

MARINE PRODUCTION DETAILS

Details That Need to Be Clear Before Cutting

Marine components rely on surrounding structure and assembly information that may not be obvious.

The following details affect the result.

Material and Actual Thickness

Specify the material type, grade and nominal thickness. Actual sheet thickness can affect slots, rebates, joins, fitted parts and mating components.

Face and Grain Direction

Identify visible faces, grain direction, bend direction and any sheet orientation that must be maintained during nesting.

Port, Starboard and Orientation

Clearly identify port and starboard parts, mirrored components, inside and outside faces, forward and aft orientation, and any parts that must not be reversed.

Stations, Datums and Reference Geometry

Supply the centreline, station, baseline, reference edge or mating geometry needed to understand how the component relates to the rest of the vessel.

Machining and Fitted Details

Mark through-cuts, pockets, rebates, slots, holes, bevel information and any assembly details that affect the CNC work. Test pieces may be recommended for fitted joints or uncertain material thickness.

Part Names and Revisions

Each part should have a clear name or number. The current revision, quantity and any port or starboard versions should be easy to identify before production begins.
